Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven (James 5: 14-15).
Commonly referred to as "last rites". However The Rite of Anointing tells us we should not wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the sacrament. The sacrament is best conferreed early in an illness, not later as the person nears death.
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is the proper sacrament for those Christians whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age. It may be celebrated in the home, in a hospital or insitution such as a skilled nursing facility or rehabiliation facility, or in church. The sick person who is not confined to bed may take part in the sacrament of anointing in a church, chapel or other appropriate place.
The sacrament of anointing may be repeated:
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not given conditionally, that is, to persons who “may” be sick. It may be administered to those who are truly sick who, when otherwise in control of their mental faculties, would ordinarily have requested it.
A person must be baptized in order to receive the Sacrament of The Anointing of The Sick. For those that are not baptized, prayers for the sick, commendations for the dying and prayers after death may be offered.
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is only available to the living.
